Jesus the Black Nazarene
Who We Are:
The Black Nazarene refers to a life-sized, dark-colored statue of Jesus Christ that was brought to Manila, Philippines, from Mexico on May 31, 1606, by the first group of Augustinian Recollect friars sent by Spain.
The image was charred black in a fire that broke out on the ship during its trip to Manila from Mexico. It also survived two great fires that destroyed the Quiapo Church in Manila in 1791 and 1929. And it withstood the great earthquakes of 1645 and 1863, as well as the destructive bombing of Manila in 1945 during WWII.
In 1608, the Recollect Fathers started promoting the devotion to the suffering of our Lord. The confraternity or Cofradia de Jesus Nazareno was established on April 21, 1621. The brotherhood got its papal blessing from His Holiness Pope Innocent X on April 20, 1650. In the 19th century, His Holiness Pope Pius VII granted indulgence to those who prayed before the image of the Black Nazarene.
Our Commitment:
Our vision is that through the devotional prayers to Jesus the Black Nazarene, we will exemplify the teachings and works of Jesus and help develop a strong Catholic Christian community.
What We Do:
Our mission is to promote the devotion to Jesus the Black Nazarene to all peoples. We do this by implementing different Committees called WESTY: Worship, Education, Service, Temporalities, Youth.
Time & Training:
- Members and devotees meet every 1st Friday of the month for fellowship at 7:00 pm, followed by the Novena to Jesus the Black Nazarene at 7:30 pm.
- Members meet every 3rd Friday of the month to carry out the functions of each sub-committee, such as Bible Study, Retreats, and other Christian formation.
- Every year, the Feast of the Black Nazarene is celebrated on the 1st Saturday after Epiphany. Novena begins in the morning the church. This is followed by a procession of the Black Nazarene statue in the church and its vicinity, which coincides with the tradition of a million devotees in the Philippines. The Feast concludes with the celebration of Holy Mass in the church and a reception afterwards.
- Once a year, members host a fundraising campaign. Past campaigns have included a Hawaiian Costume Dance Party, sponsoring a Scholarship Program, and participating in a Medical Mission, among others.
Requirements:
- Members must be baptized Catholics in good standing with the Church who want to share their lives to the mission and vision of the ministry.
- Members must be able to attend the functions of the ministry as in matters of devotion, procession, meetings, and other activities.
- All members must complete the archdiocesan Safe Environment Training for Adults
