Legion of Mary
Who We Are:
The Legion of Mary is the largest lay organization in the Catholic Church with well over three million members worldwide. The Legion is an army devoted to spiritualization with the Blessed Mother as our commander.
Founded in Ireland on September 7, 1921, by Frank Duff, the Legion of Mary is guided by our Heavenly Father and the Blessed Virgin Mary for the purpose of bringing souls closer to Jesus Christ.
We have been active in the United States since 1931, in Houston since 1947, and here at Holy Family Catholic Church since June 2000.
Our Commitment:
Our unit of the Legion of Mary is called a praesidium. We hold weekly meetings where prayer is intermingled with reports and discussions.
Each member performs a minimum of two hours per week of spiritual works in the spirit of faith and in union with the Blessed Mother.
What We Do:
- Visit the infirm in hospitals or those in nursing homes
- Take communion o the homebound
- Participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA)
- Bring the statue of Our Lady to the homes of parishioners and pray the Holy Rosary with families
- Arrange for home blessings and home enthronements
- Provide ministry to inactive Catholics
Time & Training:
The Legion of Mary offers a variety of weekly meeting days and times to accommodate your schedule. Meeting days and times are as follows:
English: every Tuesday at 7:00 pm
Spanish: every Tuesday at 7:00 pm
English: every Saturday at 10:15 am
In addition to weekly meetings, members are asked to select and perform two hours of spiritual works per week.
Requirements:
- Open to Catholics who have a great desire to serve in the Blessed Mother’s army
- Must be, at least, 18 years of age
- All members must complete the Archdiocesan Safe Environment Training for Adults
